Comic Corner: Her Name Is Rachel Grey

Okay, so it’s been quite sometime since I last made a post, I’ve been busy between bettering myself and being a lazy 21-year-old, which is contradictory… Hmmm something to think about. Anyway, I’ve been doing some fanboy reading, and it has occurred to me that Rachel Grey, aka Rachel Summers, aka Marvel Girl, aka Phoenix has somewhat of a small fan base. Either that or a larger “hater base.” So I figured I’d show her some love since she’s one of my all-time favorite super heroes.imageNow why do I love Rachel Grey so much? Let me see… She’s the daughter of one of the most prolific comic book heroes, Jean Grey; Her father is sort of leader of the X-Men; sister of Cable and Nate Grey (who is AOA Cable: another story). She’s practically comic book royalty. But despite the many different things there are to like about Rachel Grey, it’s her complex past and family tree that over shadows her character. Very much like her mother, I feel as though many writers shy away from her because of her character baggage, loose ends and all. So instead of taking the lead she’s often left in the background for decorations like our ole buddy Iceman. This sort of thing happens to must less mainstream characters. For example: Psylocke, whose screwed up past is just now getting sorted out; Rogue whose powers, accent and boyfriend drama limited her for years, is now popping up several comic book series as a leading character.image

The cure for “complicated character disease” is a good writer. Luckily, Brian Wood is up for the task. In an interview with Comic Book Resources sometime ago, Wood had this to say:

“‘Who’s Rachel Grey?’ is a question that will always be answered right away with the names of her parents. Which is understandable up to a point, but by now she’s got a long history as a character and is very much her own person. I’m writing her, consciously or not, very much removed from her parents. Gotta give the girl a break.”

One of my favorite things about Rachel Grey is her connection to the Marvel—or should I say, the X-Universe. Rachel Grey is supposed to be the beacon of hope for Mutant kind. Since the death of her Mother, the one Chris Claremont had planned, Rachel was supposed to carry on the legacy of Jean Grey, serving as a new chapter for the Phoenix Saga and the X-Men. But Jean’s justifiable resurrections distorted this path for Rachel, and so somewhere down the line she was lost to us. But she’s back, and now its time for her to take her place in the Marvel Universe.

Rachel isn’t just Scott and Jean’s daughter. She’s a feisty, morally grounded, mutant. She carries Professor Xavier’s dream, as well as safeguarding the present from the horrific future from which she came. She’s one of the most powerful and formidable super heroes of Earth, she thinks for herself, and never backs down. See how she stands up to Thor?imageSHE WILL RISE AGAIN!

AVX: Recap: What We Know So Far

Part One: The Recap:

Okay so since the time of her birth in Messiah Complex (which I recently read a few nights ago) Hope Summers was destined for great things. Her birth gave way to both wondrous and tragic things. Some would build faith in her existence and other would shutter at her potential. War would be declared in her name, as two sides struggled to fight for a future. Now here we are in the second act of Avengers Vs. X-men counting down to the grand conclusion of what is to change the Marvel U forever. After learning the Phoenix Force’s expected arrival, Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine, and the rest of the Avengers set out to take control of what they believed to be a disaster waiting to happen. Fearing that the X-Men, mainly Cyclops, leader of the Mutant race might be way in over their heads. Believing Hope to be the center of what is to come, all players engage in a global game of capture the flag. Sides were chosen, and lines were drawn. While Hope struggles to escape both sides, Captain America issues a warrant for the X-Men’s arrest; as Iron Man takes to his lab to find a scientific solution. Thinking her time has come, Wolverine sets out to keep his promise to Hope, to kill her before the Phoenix completely takes her over. Cyclops and the rest of the X-Men veterans manage to escape and fight the Avengers long enough to stall for the Phoenix’s arrival. But it wasn’t until the battle in the Blue Area of the Moon, AVX #5, that both sides learn that they were wrong, and have caused a more unstable situation.  Iron Man, in a act of desperation, tries to intercept and capture the Phoenix Force before it gets to Hope, but instead shatters its core into five pieces causing it to take refuge in Namor, Emma, Magik, Colossus, and Cyclops, thus birthing the Phoenix Five. Using the Power of the Phoenix, the X-Men eliminated war, world hunger, and even poverty. But their good intentions would prove limited as the resistance of the Avengers persisted. By the second act, the Avengers were running on desperate. The Avengers planned one last mission; to get Hope out of the clutches of Cyclops, and get her to safety until they can figure out her next move. But this would prove to be fatal, as they have under estimated the true power of the Phoenix. Hawkeye was seemingly killed by Emma Frost, while Spider-Woman, Luke Cage and many others were taken as prisoners. But a turning point took place with the Scarlet Witch’s arrival, as a clue to the both the Phoenix’s power and Wanda’s chaos magic were some how connected.

Part Two: What We Know So Far:

We know that Wanda’s magic can hurt the Phoenix Force. We also know that Iron Fist Kung Fu origin dates back to one of the Phoenix’s earlier visits to Earth, and that somehow Hope is still the key to turning all of this around. We know that the Phoenix Force isn’t permanently bonded to the five X-Men hosts, and that when one fall the portion they hold is absorb by the remaining Phoenixes, making them more powerful, but smaller in numbers. Other X-Men, such as Rogue, Storm, Iceman, and Rachel Summers, realize that Scott and the rest of the remaining Phoenixes are changing under the dark influence of the Phoenix. We also know that X-Men prisoner, Unit, knows exactly what Hope’s role is in all of this is, and that there is one last step before everything goes BOOM! Emma and Cyclops are the only ones left with the Phoenix Force, and Professor X finally puts his foot down and warns Scott to stop this madness before he has to. Meanwhile, Emma slips deeper into the clutches of the Phoenix, and tuns colder than usual. This brings us to AVX #10. Right before the fall of Wakanda, brought on by a power drunken Namor, Hope is taken to K’un Lun, the birth place of Kung Fu, where she will train and prepare herself to take back the Phoenix Force. Unfortunately, Hope’s time in K’un Lun would be cut short as Cyclops learns of her whereabouts and tares through the fabric of space to get to her. On the run from Cyclops, Hope runs to Lei Kung for help, while Iron Man gives “Everything he’s got left” to Scott, but it doesn’t  hold Scott for long. Fortunately, Hope doesn’t need anymore time, as the truth about her connection to Wanda, Kung Fu, and the Phoenix Force surfaces for the very first time. Manifesting the power of all three, Hope sends Cyclops back a couple of thousand miles. After recovering from Hope’s Chaos Fist, Cyclops seeks more power from the Phoenix, and targets Emma Frost

Review: Wolverine and the X-Men #12

Finally! Somebody who can write a strong female character like Rachel Summers and do her more than justice. Aaron has finally brought our favorite
(living) redheaded X-Man front and center in the great Avengers Vs X-Men epic. Rachel was everywhere in this action-packed issue, whopping ass and taking names. But apart from all the glorious mind punching, and telekinetic kung fu, this issue showed us the Rachel we all know and love; and all grown up from the great person she already was. Avengers Vs X-Men is a war between to sides that want the best for the world. But who’s to say what the best is? And that’s what we find out here, as Rachel struggles to choose a rightful side. Tasked by her father, Cyclops, now 1/5 of the Phoenix Five to track down and retrieve Hope Summers from the Avengers; a task that only a former Hound can do, as Rachel battles those she knew as friends and people she once looked up to. As the story progress, Rachel struggles to balance out her new peace of mind and her old ways as a hound that hunted and led her mutant race to near extinction. As a battle between her and the Avengers ensues, Rachel is forced into a corner, that sadly she is prepared for. But something amazing happens: Rachel chooses a side, but not the one you may think. This issue was beautiful from start to finish, with all the color effects and action sequences, this issue really dazzled. If you asked me, its hands down one of the best issue to come out of AVX thus far. The issue brought to the light some questions fans might have been wondering about, since the beginning of Avengers Vs X-Men, for example, “What role will Rachel play in this event?” “Will Rachel finally get to have a one on one conversation with Hope?” “What are Rachel’s feelings towards the Phoenix Force and the Phoenix Five?” So bravo Jason Aaron, for writing such a terrific issue, and showing the world the point of view that some of us X-Men fans have been longing for!

Unfortunately for Doom, He couldn’t keep control of the full power of the Life Force and was reduced back to his all powerful, worldly threat self (as if there’s any difference , right?) Anyhow, Doom vents in his embarrassment, and reveals a shocking truth about the origin of M-Day. After his retreat, everyone’s attention is brought a sad stand still as one of our heroes have fallen victim to Doom’s lust for power.

After rogue gathers her brief team for a brief mission to save Ariel whose been trapped between time and space since the event of Second Coming, she finally makes her decision, but its not because of the man you think she would base her decision on… it’s someone that she looked up to as a brother and mentor since she’s been an X-men, Cyclops; and with her decision made she tells Scott a truth that explains his personality to a T, a reality that he did not want to face.In Uncanny X-men #03 the X-tinction team find themselves in a race against time, as they face the villainous Mister Sinister, and the potential eradication of the human race brought by the Celestials. Marvel’s Next Big Event: Avengers Vs X-men!

Here you have its Marvel’s next big event! Its the Avengers vs the X-men, and it will rock your world! In a 12-part bi-weekly series debuting in April the entire Marvel Universe will be called into question  as described by Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso stating  "its not part of a cosmic event, but a Marvel Universe event," adding, "Very soon, we’re going to reveal all". when the question "What would you do?" is asked two population of super powered heroes will choose how they will defend their world, their home, and everything they’ve been fighting for.

It started with the birth of a baby, who became the Messiah of one race, Hope Summers. Picking up from 2009’s X-Men Second Coming crossover, Hope will be the center of attention once again as she is the presumed next host of the Phoenix Force. The X-men will always protect their own; but the Avenger would do anything to keep the greater-good safe, and so begins the Avengers Vs the X-men. Alonso says. “The Phoenix Force is the spirit of destruction and rebirth. It razes worlds to create something new. It’s bad news if you happen to be living on the world about to be razed. It’s great news if you’re what’s going to be the outcome of that world.”

Ever since this past summer Marvel has been saying that Fear Itself, Schism, and the Avengers: The Children Crusade happened for a reason, and that all main characters will play a pivotal role in the upcoming event, characters like the Scarlet Witch. Hope was born with a prophecy, she resembles one person, and she already holds a portion of what seems to be the Phoenix Force. It is history in the making, and she will step into the light, but I cant ignore one giant question; What does this mean for Jean Grey? With the entire family present; Rachel Grey, Nate Grey, Hope Summers, Cyclops and soon Cable, it appears that someone has been preparing for a special occasion. Now she has been making small appearances since her latest death, and its been insinuated that she’s been up to something, preparing for something. The Phoenix has been collecting her pieces, as we saw it leave some of its current hosts. Emma Frost even witnessed her presence, but could that had really been her? What does Emma Frost know, that’s been keeping her so distance from Hope Summers? If she is out there, what is Jean Grey planning? And for goodness sake where is Professor X?!

The core “Avengers Vs. X-Men” title will be co-written by Marvel’s “Architect” writers; Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Jonathan Hickman, Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction; and drawn by big name artists Frank Cho, John Romita, Jr., Olivier Coipel and Adam Kubert.

Comic Corner: This Week on Comic Book Wednesday!

This week on Comic Book Wednesday Rogue and her team of X-men are back on planet earth after rescuing the short lived team of Starjammers which included members: Havok, Polaris, Marvel Girl, and Korvus. Rogue isnt sure whether she should follow her heart or her brain; to go with Wolverine or stay with Cyclops; to be with Gambit or to be with Magneto. As Rougue contemplates where she wants to be she discovers a mysterious presence of another being floating around the returned adventurers from space. As she and the rest of the X-men get to the bottom of this elusive “x-gene” carrier they discover an old friend who was thought to be lost.

Meanwhile, Cyclops and his X-tinction team get themselves in a bit of a complicated situation with Mr. Sinister and his “Army of Sinisters”. As the team try to battle their way through, they learn of an approaching group of Celestials. According to Agent Brand of S.W.O.R.D. the Celetials are concerned with whats going on with the humans and the Dreaming Celestial in San Francisco. The Celestials have the power to wipe the earth clean and allow evolution to start again, but Mister Sinister has a better plans for evoulution. But  what do the X-men have to do with all of this?

X-men Legacy…What’s left behind?

The X-men’s outkast have chosen their side; but they’re not out of the woods yet. Possibly the X-men’s most adventurous squad Rogue, Gambit, Marvel Girl, and Frenzy find them selves as educators, and protectors of the Jean Grey School For High Learning. Not only will this series focus on them in the school but will also follow their lives outside the world of the X-men. Characters such as Iceman, Husk, and Cannonball will also get a story; and more faces will be seen throughout the series run, under the creative guidance of Christos Gage.

Comic Corner: Embracing the Future of Marvel

So this week has been pretty chaotic with the announcement of Marvel’s plans for the future, and if you are a true fan, I’m sure you are a bit distraught at the moment; in fear of what Marvel’s plans mean for some of your favorite characters, titles, and writers. On one hand a fan can appreciate the thoughtfulness that goes into the creative process of a character’s wellbeing, but on the other hand it can be a little terrifying to not know what that process involves. Sort of like being a responsible driver who has built quite a record of avoiding accidents when driving, who is suddenly placed in the passengers seat while a lunatic takes the wheel. You have no idea what that said lunatic is going to do next. That’s kind of how most of us die-hard fans feel when a relaunch is in the works. Scary, right?

Now speaking from a more supportive and mature perspective; I agree with Marvel’s ideas to bring the Marvel U together, and to go back to the bronze and even silver age, when things were a little more sane. It was noticed that somewhere down the line one of Marvel’s biggest franchises if not the biggest, was torn from the rest of the Marvel U. Yes, we’re talking about the X-Men. But although that maybe true, it is understandable as to how that happen. The X-Men have always been popular, but it was during the 90s that they became famous, and with that recognition, a target was put on their heads both in story and publication. The X-Men were seen as the underdogs who where changing the game, and I bet my bottom comic that this provided a lot of untapped potential to expand on. The X-Men were to the comic book world like a bubble to the stock market. Now I was only a kid when all this was going on so excuse me if I seem to not make any sense in what I’m saying, but from that very same perspective I know for a fact that the X-Men were every where from the pages of Uncanny to the animated series to the big screen in 2000, not to fail to mention my backpack, and every wall in my room; and I was just one of millions of little boys who thought by the time they hit puberty their x-gene would activate and over night they’d become an X-Man.

Marvel says its time for change, and that they want this change to have a impact for decades to come, but what does that mean for all the stories we’ve lived through, all the bonds we formed with our favorite characters? Jean Grey, yes we want her back, but I think I speak for a lot of like-minded fans, when I say not like this. Jean Grey was taken from us two times too many. Our obsession with her return was not to simply have a super hot green-eyed redhead with a super powerful mind running around the Marvel U again. We wanted her back so she can take back control of her life. We wanted to see that argument with Emma Frost, or that painful divorce with Scott Summers as she approached new horizons, even if it was with Wolverine.  We wanted another chance to see her grow. I cant help but feel that Jean’s return to Marvel U (via time travel) is a bit cheap for Marvel’s creators, not to fail to mention it leaves a very loose end with Phoenix: Endsong and Warsong.

But like I said before, I support Marvel’s decision on where they are taking things. So long as they don’t assume that the Avengers are everybody’s favorite super hero group and continue to over use some characters, like Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow, and give the reins to more interesting characters than the future of the Marvel U should be very bright.

Last Week on Comic Books Wednesday!

Last week on Comic Book Wednesday proved to be a lot of fun with the X-men. It was all about the students, and their new care-free life, but unfortunately last week’s Comic Book Wednesday also served as a double edge knife: In Wolverine and the X-men #4 Kitty Pryde taught Future History 101, and as guest-lecturer Deathlok stop by to tell the students how their future would turn out. Much to Professor Pryde’s distaste Deathlok revealed the grim truth about the students of the Jean Grey School For Higher Learning. Genesis (kid Apocalpyse) joins the student body, and an amnesiac Angel discovers a new power, a miracle. And Kitty Pryde finds out about a rather unexpected pregnancy?

Meanwhile in X-men Legacy 260.1 Rogue and her team take some R&R with the students as they play a game of football (which by the way seems to be the JGSHL choice of sport). But that would prove to be short lived as a portal to another dimension is opened, and its up to Rogue and her team to save the day. Making it their mission to give the children the life they’ve been fighting for since they’ve been X-men.

A couple of months after the events of Spider Island, we catch up to Kaine in Texas as he prepares to skip town again. Ready for a new life and finally able to fit in like a normal person (as normal as having powers can get) Kaine seeks to live a life free of stress a worry, but all he needs is some cash to get him there. While in Texas a series of events happen forcing Kaine to choose between what he really wants in life, and what he has to do. Choosing to follow the “With great power, comes great responsibility” motto, he contemplates to fully take on the Scarlet Spider mantle or let some other superhero worry about the innocent public.

In Magneto: Not A Hero #3, Erik finds himself going up against Joseph and his team of cloned members of the original Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. However, Joseph underestimates Magneto as he decimates his opponents, and escapes with Astra. With Joseph still out there Magneto has the Stepford Cuckoos to read Astra’s mind to figure out the motives behind Joseph’s return.

Comic-Corner: Have you seen this man?

He was last seen in Wolverine and the X-men #1. His name is Professor Charles Xavier. He is the creator of the X-Men and founder of the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning (now Jean Grey School for Higher Learning). He is known to be the most skilled telepath on earth mentoring powerful successors such as Jean Grey, Rachel Summers, and Psylocke. He had a dream that one day Mutants and Humans will coexist in peace and harmony. He fights for the greater good, and is a wise adviser to all. For the past few years his X-men have been battling for their survival, as the Mutant race struggle to keep from extinction. He stepped down as leader and let his greatest creation , Scott Summers, take charge and lead them out of this chaos, but he has become a mere echo of his previous involvement with the world’s issues. With Marvel’s “next big thing”, Avengers Vs X-men coming soon, it would be a shame if he is not around to witness and partake in the actual event as it is has everything to do with his existence, and the main reason he’s been fighting for so long. Will Professor X make his way back to Marvel’s inner-circle of heroes? Will anyone seek his help, and knowledge of the Phoenix Force? And depending on the result of this event will he decide to come back home or leave forever?

Comic Corner: This Week on Comic Book Wednesday!

Okay so a lot happened this week on “Comic Book Wednesday” from my personal pull list which includes: Wolverine and The X-men #2, Astonishing X-men #44, and last but certainly not least Fantastic Four #600. Nowadays Astonishing X-men have been on the fast track to weird town; and picking up after the events of Schism Cyclops finds himself in a rather weird dream involving a peculiar storyline with one of his dearest teammates, it is here that we find out Cyclops has an untapped potential for skills and finesse with his optic blast; but the crazy part about this dream is once Cyclops wakes up he finds out that he’s been captured! He still must be dreaming, its either that or he’s awaiting his fate in an alternate world/future. But how did he get there; and has one of his closest friends betrayed him? Meanwhile on the east coast, as expected the first day of school is nothing short of disastrous for Wolverine and his X-men. With the New York Department of Education observing the school grounds, Wolverine and the rest of the senior staff battle a continuous wave of attacks from the Hellfire Brats. With all the odds against them, Wolverine looks to Iceman to “do something amazing” and that’s exactly what he does. But what appeared to be saving the day, only turned out to be matter of saving time as for what was coming next leaves all hope with the rebellious Quentin Quire.  Fantastic Four #600 proved to be a gigantic event rapped up into one one hundred page issue, and it looks like our first family has their work cut out for them. With all the revelations occurring at once, the team is split up again, and are battling to survive and save the world. As Reed and Susan try to fend off the Kree attack on the city, Spider-Man heads for the Baxter Building to save the children only to find something so shocking he’s at a lost for words. It seems that the Inhumans are the focal point for all that is happening, and in a flash back Reed receives some dyer information from Galactus concerning the well being of the planet Earth, and a past dealing with the Asgardians. But within all this chaos, a shocking truth is revealed to Franklin Richards.

In Avengers: The Children Crusade #8 Doctor Doom gains complete control over all reality. He proposes a Utopia (basically another House of M just doom style) to the world but under one condition, that everyone recognize his power.

Rachel fears for Korvus’ safety being on earth, a planet that is so far behind in technology and evolution its like living in the stone age for him. Magneto uses every bit of strength he has left to by them time, but the only person Sinister doesn’t have his mitts on is Hope, to which he has other plans for.

While the X-men battle to save the Earth, Sinister took the opportunity to meet and confront Hope about her destiny, and the meaning of the word “Phoenix”.
