Comic Corner: Mac Daddy Ice

So who’s the better girlfriend for Iceman, also known as Bobby Drake? Iceman first made his appearance on the heroic scene with Professor Charles Xavier’s first class of X-Men, and has proven on many occasion to be one of the biggest believers in Xavier’s Dream. But the road to glory can be a lonely one, and so a few lover interests along the way is inevitable. So we’re going to go back in time to visit some of Iceman’s most memorable leading ladies.image In an effort to keep this short, we’re just going to burn through a few of his past girlfriends. Away from the X-Men, Iceman joined the Defenders on Beast’s behest, and met and fell in love with Cloud, who turned out to be a stellar nebula that took the female human form. After sometime of courtship from teammates Moondragon and Iceman, Cloud became the center of a love triangle. In the end, Cloud chose Moondragon and changed to the male sex. Leaving Iceman to return to the X-Men loveless. I think it’s safe to say that we all can see why this relationship didn’t workout, so there’s no need to weigh in on pros and cons.imageDuring his run with X-Factor, Bobby met and began dating his long time on-and-off-again girlfriend Opal Tanaka. Opal was aware of Bobby’s mutant heritage as well as his superhero occupation, and the two soon fell in love only to have Opal kidnapped by her grandfather’s forces to marry Hiro Tatsu, a Cybernetic Samurai Warrior of the Tatsu clan. Bobby traveled to Japan to challenge Hiro in an honorable battle to win Opal back, which he did. Returning back to America Opal, wanting a normal life and Bobby’s affiliation to the X-Men soon took its toll and the two went their separate ways.imageSometime after she met Hiro again despite nothing becoming of their relationship. She is next seen with a child that we presume is her own, the fathers identity remains secret and she has returned to San Francisco and resumed a relationship with Iceman. However, the two split and her whereabouts are uncertain, most likely still in San Fran. Bobby’s a young bachelor, settling down and starting a family probably isn’t in his short-term goals, he’s still has some growing up to do. Moving forward. Like anytime when you think about past ex-girlfriends, there’s always one that always leaves you pondering, “What the hell was I thinking?” Well for Bobby, that relationship belongs to Mystique. Yeah you read right, Mystique. Mystique puts the dangerous in deadly, and just like something no-good entering our lives at a time of darkness, Mystique came into Bobby’s at the right time. Bobby and Mystique’s relationship made as much sense as Spider-Man’s role in Avengers Vs. X-Men. Mystique has a criminal history that’s probably ongoing as it is unmatched. Now, Bobby was going through a lot of changes with his powers and where he stood with the X-Men, so it’s understandable why he allowed love, if it was love, to blind him. Also, considering his friendship with Rogue and Nightcrawler would have made things weird…can you say step-daddy Iceman? Anyway Mystique, like always, shows her true colors and betrays Bobby and the rest of X-Men. So we’ll refer to her as the one we’re glad to have got away. I wonder if she really liked him?imageThen there was Iceman’s indirect relationship with Havok. Yeah, for some reason these two have more in common than any other X-Men members, when it comes to dating. For as long as Polaris has been an X-Men Iceman has always loved her, but sadly Polaris was madly in love with Alex Summers the younger brother of Cyclops. Wherever he went she went, and so Iceman never had a chance, except when nurse Annie took up residence at the Xavier School, and Havok broke off his engagement with Polaris. Funny, how Iceman dated nurse Annie before she left him for Alex, but even for a short while Iceman finally got what he wanted Polaris. and the she lost her powers after M-Day and ran off with Havok. Poor Iceman, it’s not your fault, there’s just something in the Summer’s blood that drives woman crazy. Besides, from what I hear she’s not all there in the head, and she’s got daddy issues, so you know how that goes. imageNow at the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning, Iceman began dating Shadowcat, also known as Kitty Pryde, who recently got out of a complicated longterm relationship with Colossus, and has chosen Bobby, to be her new boy toy. Things are definitely looking up for Bobby, and it seems Kitty really cares about him, which makes sense because they’ve known each other forever, and the timing is right. Shadowcat is the most like Iceman, she has a great sense of humor, she’s young, and a true X-Men. Although the age difference between her and Bobby isn’t clear, she balances him out, as far as maturity goes. Could this be the beginning of another epic X-Relationship? I sure hope so, because after going through this love journey of his, I just want Iceman to get the happiness he deserves. So Colossus, stay away! image

Comic Corner: Power Struggle

So I just finished reading my comic books for the week, which by the way, were missing my weekly fixes of X-Men comics. Anyway as I was reading, I started to think to myself who holds the heavy weight title in the Marvel U? No I’m not talking about strength wise, like the Hulk and Thor, but power all around. Now AVX has changed the Marvel Universe as we knew it, and since then a lot of titles have been stripped entirely. For instance, can the Phoenix Force really be killed? Its the baby of the Universe drawing its powers from an infinite supply of future psionic energy. Its sole purpose was to cut and regrow any part of the galaxy its saw fit. Now all of the sudden its gone? You would think the Universe would have a very violent back lash. Where the hell did these three come from?

What about that power source the Scarlet Witch tapped into that allowed her to cause House of M? Or what about the Elder Gods or The One-Above-All? Isn’t Franklin Richards suppose to grow up to be the most powerful being ever? And let’s not forget Rachel Grey, who welded the Phoenix Force, and saw all kinds of revelations. There seems to be a lot of self-appointed individuals claiming to be the most powerful. Do they all work together some how, or is there a pecking order of some kind? Not necessarily new, but now prominent in current events, we have Captain Universe who serves as a host to the sentient Uni-Power? She seems pretty cool, and insanely powerful considering the Uni-Power draws from the imagination of its host. So think of all the possibilities. Wow. Basically what I’m trying to ask is, when it’s all said and down…who calls the shots? Now as ambiguous and elusive as he may be, its safe to assume that the One-Above-All is God of the Marvel U. But then you have Eternity, Death, Infinity, the Living Tribunal, and so on and so forth. All of these characters are very cool, and unique. But I can’t help but feel most of them do the same things, and after awhile, they just undermine each other’s power. Am I the only to feel this way?

We Are Heroes! Salutes Robert Morales

imageToday, the world has lost a True Believer. Robert Morales, writer of the historic 2002 Truth: Red, White, and Black Marvel minnie series, has passed away at the age of 54. Along side Kyle Baker, Morales told the forgotten beginnings of the first Captain America, Isaiah Bradley, an African American man who found himself part of an early experiment to perfect the Super-Soldier Serum later given to Steve Rogers. Morales subsequently shattered any existing racial barrier that stood before him. His interest in historical authenticity grabbed the attention of many; as his creativity almost single handily redefined diversity in Marvel Comics. imageThe story of Isaiah Bradley was inspired by the true events behind the Tuskegee Experiments. A historically real and unethical project where hundreds of African-American men from Tuskegee, AL. were told they would be receiving free medical care on behalf of the government and were unknowingly injected instead with syphilis.Starting in 1932, the government authorized project continued for another four decades until it was leaked to the press  in 1972. Robert Morales contribution to comic book history will live on through characters such as Elijah Bradley, grandson of the original Captain America.

Comic Corner: Jamie Foxx is Electro

Ever wondered what Jamie Foxx would look like if he was a blue, electrifying, super-powered villain? Yeah me neither, but luckily we don’t have to. Thanks to thanks to Daily Mail Online, we can get an idea of what Electro will look like in the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2 film. So without further ado… its Electro! (He’s the blue guy in the hoodie)I guess Marvel figured the classic green and yellow costume wouldn’t translate well on the big screen, and probably for good reason. Foxx also said back in December when describing his look:

“They want to try new things, like a liquid rubber and things like that, and there are all these bolts and stuff in my arms when they are hanging me upside down and trying to figure out what happen.”

Although it works for the comics, doesn’t mean it works for Hollywood. Come on, if you saw Jamie Fox in some green and yellow spandex getup, would you fear him? That’s what I thought. I think it was a wise decision to go with the Ultimate Electro look; it gives him the edge he needs to go up against the nerdy, but cool Andrew Garfield. So what do you think, folks? Should Marvel have gone with the classic or did they make the right decision?

Comic Corner: Uncanny Avengers #5

So here’s what you missed last time on Uncanny Avengers: Rule numero uno, is that the work of Apocalypse is never done, and although things may have ended with the Dark Angel Saga, the story set in motion is not quite over. Twins have been born in the City of Akkaba, which makes Archangel a father. Surprise!imageThe Wasp and Wonder Man, join the team for moral and public relational support, and from the way Rogue is acting, they have their work cut out for them. But that’s the least of their problems. imageOn the other side of the globe, Wolverine sniffs out Shiro Yoshida, Sunfire, and asks him to join the team, which seem pretty damn, convenient given his time as a horseman of Apocalypse. Who are we kidding, we know that’s why he’s coming out of comic book limbo. Any who, it’s always good to see another familiar face, even if he’s rude and arrogant. imageBack at the Mansion, Havok’s been feeling the pressures of being the poster child for the Avengers’ unity division. With all the hoopla surrounding the Red Skull and the mess he made during his assault on New York City, the Avengers’ have to prove more than ever that mutants are not the dangerous deviants people believe them to be. But his nervousness as leader hasn’t gone unnoticed.imageThe Scarlet Witch wants to be leader, but with a emotional and mental state like hers—that’s just not going to happen. Sorry Wanda. Besides, her past screams mutant terrorist: the daughter of Magneto, House of M, M-Day, Avengers Disassemble, the list goes on. Now, don’t get me wrong, the Scarlet Witch, has done just as much good as she’s done bad—wait that’s not true, but my point is, the Scarlet Witch is still a valuable member of the team, and her importance is best served with her experience, and not her leadership. Maybe in another reality, Wanda—pause.imageHavok gives a very honorable speech on identity politics to the public, introducing the “M-word.” Which brings this round circle to the theory that mutants represents blacks in America, and the general population symbolizes the majority that was the white supremacists. Which is pretty cool, because I’ll have to admit, I didn’t like the whole idea of X-Men joining the Avengers, and Captain America acting as their indirect voice.image

The Grim Reaper interrupts his speech, yelling at the Scarlet Witch; something to do with the Witch’s godly powers bringing him back to life against his will. The Avengers respond fiercely to take him down, but as surely as his return from the dead has made him angry, it has also made him seemingly more powerful than before, and the Avengers are no match for him except his brother Simon, who has perfect timing; deciding to become a pacifist. Which causes Rogue to get the job done, but what she didn’t know is that there is a such thing as over doing it.imageimageThe most important lesson that Captain America and the rest of the avengers on the team are going to have to learn, is that the X-Drama never ends and rarely makes sense. So…image
